ON MY LEISURE

When I consider how my time is spent,
So little carefree youth yet left to me;
My leisure time, which I would spend so free,
Devoured by work, although my mind's more bent
To spend my time for pleasure and present
Myself with mirth and joy and laughter free
And spend my hours to but entertain me--
"Does work retard but never profit me?"
I fondly ask. But conscience to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, "A person needs
Both work and play to round out life each day;
Too much of one does bring insipience,
The other talent dies within its seeds.
One heavily laden with work, they say,
Accomplishes more as a consequence."
